I am very high functioning in some areas, and low functioning in others. I don't want people to assume that because I can study at university level, speak two languages, travel abroad independently, and am very sociable, that I don't have real support needs in other areas. I've had 30 years to perfect appearing normal to casual observers, it can be very difficult to tear all that down to fit in the boxes people like autistic people to fit into. Also, I struggle to use the phone, and this makes it difficult to get services as many providers will only use the phone to contact me, especially NHS. I have a friend who is an alcoholic because she could not cope the with stress of being autistic. I wouldn't want her to be excluded because of her coping strategy. |

i want ongoing support for adults! Proper autism support is not about working towards independence, but about finding a level of support that helps someone to function until they die. People are not cured of autism, nor does it get better over time. |
